OREGON CITY, OR — Of the 36 drivers who were stopped during a 4-hour pedestrian safety operation in Oregon City last week, 25 were issued citations, nine were given warnings, and one person was arrested.
The July 6 safety operation at the intersection of Seventh and John Adams streets, next to Carnegie Park and the library, was the first pedestrian decoy operation funded by an Oregon Impact grant to be conducted in Oregon City this year. And while 36 individual traffic stops may seem high, it doesn't beat the 43 stops and more than 60 citations issued during a 4-hour operation at the same intersection in August 2017.
As with the previous operation, the July 6 enforcement action was an effort to educate drivers and raise awareness of Oregon's pedestrian right-of-way laws.
For this operation, one officer would observe traffic violations that occurred while a decoy pedestrian crossed the intersection. The officer would then radio ahead to marked OCPD patrols who would in-turn pull over the offender. Of the 36 drivers who were stopped, eight did not stop for decoy at all, according to Oregon City police.
Along with the eight failure-to-stop citations, nine citations were issued for driving while using a mobile communication device, two citations were for failing to obey a traffic control device, two were for not having an operator's license, two were for not wearing a seatbelt, one was for no insurance, and one was for an unspecified equipment violation.
One driver was arrested for driving while criminally suspended.
According to Oregon City police officials, the intersection at Carnegie Park was chosen for these operations because of typically heavy foot traffic along Seventh Street. And although there is a flashing pedestrian signal at the intersection's crosswalk, there continues to be reason for law enforcement to focus on this area.
The Oregon City Police Department wants to remind everyone to be aware of your surroundings when operating a motor vehicle and avoid distracted driving by not using your mobile communication device.
