County to celebrate 175th anniversary with Oct. 25 event

50-year time capsule to be buried; Public invited but space limited

Clackamas County is set to celebrate its 175th anniversary with a celebratory event at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 25. The event will be held in the Board of County Commissioners’ Hearing Room, located at the Public Services Building at 2051 Kaen Road in Oregon City.

The agenda for the hour-long event includes the following:

·    A description of the items that will be buried inside a time capsule, to be lowered later that day on the grounds of the Red Soils Campus. The capsule will be buried for 50 years.

·    An introduction and recognition of all living former Clackamas County Commissioners.

·    A presentation from local historian Patrick Harris, Executive Director for the Aurora Colony Historical Society, about the history of Clackamas County.

·    Reenactor Doug Neeley, former Oregon City Mayor, giving a talk as John McLoughlin.

Refreshments will be provided after the event. The public is invited to attend, but due to limited space, RSVPs are required. An overflow room will be available as needed.

To RSVP, members of the public should email Clackamas County’s Dylan Blaylock at dblaylock@clackamas.us with the subject line “175th Reservation.” County staff will get back to individuals regarding reservation status.

In 1843, the Clackamas District was created by the state’s provisional legislature, along with Champooick (later renamed Marion), Twality (later renamed Washington), and Yamhill.

The media is welcome at the event, but also encouraged to attend the lowering of the time capsule, which will occur at 2 p.m. just outside the Public Services Building, where the Hearing Room is located.
