Volunteers needed to help crime victims

Volunteers needed to help crime victims

Training starts mid-February

The Clackamas County District Attorney’s office is looking for volunteer Victim Advocates who are interested in helping victims of crime.

Victim Advocates have the unique privilege of providing crisis intervention and follow-up support to people who are experiencing trauma caused by crime. Advocates respond to hospitals and police stations, keep victims informed of their case status, accompany victims to court (as needed), and support them in exercising their rights under Oregon law.

People who succeed in this role are:

·    passionate about helping others
·    empathetic
·    good listeners
·    enjoy problem-solving

“Being the victim of a crime can be extremely traumatic,” stated District Attorney John Foote. “Knowing you have someone on your side, helping you along the way, can make all the difference in the world in recovery for the victim.”

Many volunteers work full-time jobs along with their volunteer commitment. Advocates must be at least 18 years of age and have reliable transportation and no criminal background.

More information on the program can be found at bit.ly/ClackCoVictimAdvocate.

Volunteer trainings will be held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, starting in February.

Interested parties should contact Victim Assistance at 503-655-8616 or victimassistance@co.clackamas.or.us.
