The filing
deadline for county residents to submit their names for open special
district board positions is 5 p.m. on Thursday, March 21. Those positions
will be decided by public vote in the upcoming May election.
While unpaid,
these positions are extremely influential in shaping how our local
districts operate.
“These boards give
our residents a chance to be directly involved in the decision-making
process for our infrastructure, our schools, some of our emergency
services, and more,” stated Clackamas County Clerk Sherry Hall.
“Additionally, this is a great way for some residents to get their feet wet
with public service, to see if they’re interested in pursuing other
positions later with even more responsibilities.”
Typically, board
members are charged with representing the local community by providing
direction and developing policies for the operation of the district,
establishing goals and objectives, adopting a budget, and evaluating
programs. Most positions are 4-year terms.
Most Clackamas
County residents reside in at least four different service districts. To
look up which districts and positions they are eligible to run for,
residents are encouraged to visit https://gis.oregonmetro.gov/metromap/
and enter their address. Voters may also call the Elections office at
503-655-8510 to confirm their eligibility.
The Clackamas
County Clerk is the filing officer for 143 open positions on 45 different
boards, overseeing school, fire, water and miscellaneous districts.
Filing is an easy
and inexpensive process. Candidates must fill out a simple form (located
online from the Secretary of State’s office at http://bit.ly/2GUrKmR),
and submit it at the Clackamas County Clerk’s office at 1710 S. Red Soils
Court in Oregon City. Forms are also available at the Clerk’s office.
It only costs $10
to file, with an option to provide a statement in the Voters Pamphlet for
an additional $25.
